    Road Date

This morning we headed out on a road date to Alexandria to see Dennis’ sister. A warrior heart with a fragile body.  June had one last request of me, “Take care of Dennis.”  Bless her heart.  O.K., that seals it . . . no option for trade in.

Of course there were detours.  It gave us a chance to see new countryside. Most of the wheat has been harvested and there were many fields of the stubble that remained after the wheat straw had been bailed.  Different crops for different areas.

We are thankful to be home and sound after a day on the highways.  Yup, Dennis is doing a “Dorothy of Oz” rendition of clicking his heels together.  “There is no place like home.”

These fall feeling days are my favorites.  The entire population of  . . . two on Stauffer Avenue couldn’t ask for more.  My hope for all is that tomorrow may be a day of rejuvenation to take on the new week with gusto.

    Great Morning

It was the temps that I couldn’t resist taking a long walk to the bridge over the creek.  Everything and everybody was happy.  Birds were chirping and the frogs were singing right along with them.

Walking is always a good time to think things through.  I had decided today I would touch the “on” button of the sewing machine and have at stitching out a design.  That was the first decision I made on my walk.  I knew when I got home I would call JoAnn.  My brother Michael would have been 70 years young today.  Life can seem so not fair at times.  I also muddled through what I would be fixing for supper later on.  Wow!  I had gotten a lot decided and was off to a good day.  When I got back home, I had to do a bit of patio sitting.  There have not been all that many days enjoyable as the several busy we have had this week.

Dennis was all about getting his little red pickup up to the repair shop for some brake work.  I, true to my decision, went down into the sewing studio.  It was time I did a run through on a skate towel for Megan.  Looking at stabilizers, threads, hoops and needles, I began writing things down.  I won’t be staying on this project until it is completed.  It will be done in spurts and not having to start over with materials that are being used. It’s . . . good thing.

We have had the air conditioner shut off for several days making the house really quiet.  I am not one to have the television or the radio on when I poodle through a first time stitching.  Every once in awhile I could hear something that was coming from the inside of the house.  I’d stop and really listen and then not hearing anything, I’d continue with measurements of the project.  I dang near peed in my pants when Snuggles came charging down the basement steps.  She must have weaseled her way in right behind Dennis when he came in for his phone.  That cat is determined to be a house cat.  Not!

Trying to catch a cat when they are inclined to ignore you is a losing battle.  I could see her hunch her haunches to try and jump up onto the basement window shelf.  I made a grab and missed.  Between her lunge and the window shelf, there would have been shattered glass.  That near miss sent her on the trail of walking along the edge of a shelf.  How she managed to walk along the very edge and tip off whatever her foot landed on was beyond naughty.  It was a good thing when Dennis got home and managed to wangle her into his arms.  Snuggles is so heavy, she is no match for me.

Sample-Skate-LogoIn the end, I did manage the stitch design as it will go forward for the remaining 79 towels.  The design itself is 10,660 stitches.  It almost takes more time to get the hooping done correctly and then do the cleanup of stitches after the design is done than the two-color stitching.  Yes . . . my notes are pinned next to the sewing machine.  As the towels are for the club skaters to wipe their skates off when they leave the ice, Carrie said she bought the cheapest towels she could find on Amazon during their huge promo a time back.  They are loftier than the towels we have in our bathroom.  At lease now I know I can accomplish the task at hand, knowing the steps to get it done.  It was a great morning and a very satisfying day.  This is a Grammie labor of love for Megan and her mom.  What could be a sweeter endeavor for me.

    Love the Breeze

I have windows open on all four sides of our home.  I know it is unreasonable, but could we please have this until Halloween!

I took a long walk this morning down Stauffer Avenue and made a whip around the entire block.  It’s more like going for a mile walk as there are no allies.

I stopped in to see June.  We had said we would share phone numbers quiet a while back.  June is 78 and has never had a driver’s license.  Why wouldn’t I want her to give me a call if she needs to run an errand!  She generally bides her time when her sons are done working for the day.  Sometimes, waiting may not be what is needed.  We did catch up and then I headed down and around the gravel street.

As I got around the back side of Stauffer which is 2nd Street, I popped in to see Genevieve.  Genevieve is 84 and quite mobile.  In times past, her and Dennis’ sister were close friends before Dennis’ sister and her husband moved to Alexandria.  I did want to let her know that Dennis’ sister was quite ill.  Oh my!  After a half hour I kept inching towards the back door and Genevieve kept right up with me, step for step.  It was not to be a quick visit.  She had more to talk about than I could believe.

As I was about to cut across Chuck and Bonnie’s yard to head for home, Chuck just happened to come outside.  I had to put the bladder pressure on hold to visit a bit with Chuck.  He was just getting over the Shingles and I did commiserate with him.

By the time I got home, Dennis had been watching down Stauffer Avenue to see if I was indeed coming home.  I have threatened on occasion to run away from home.  Who needs to go off to have coffee for a meet and greet in a restaurant!  All that is needed in our neighborhood is a “stop in.”

It was not a bad way to spend a morning and it did take the itch out of me to try and do some stitching or reading.  Right now television is more like listening than watching.  Good grief it’s hard to be patient and even more to the point . . . how much I had taken for granted the eyesight that allowed me to be ME!  This morning I had a great time shooting the breeze with the neighbors.

By the way . . . how wonderful to be able to enlarge the computer screen size to 150%.

    Futzing Around

What a great day outside.  For once in quite awhile, we can sit on the patio and enjoy some great weather.

Dennis was quiet today as we went about a Wednesday.  It was difficult on Dennis yesterday, spending the day with his sister as they reminisced.  She reminded Dennis that of the four children in the Curry family, he would now be the one to fill the shoes as the lone survivor.  June is fragile and ready to go Home.  I had June’s age wrong when I mentioned it yesterday.  June was 90 on June first.

To brighten the day, we went out for Noon lunch at the Home Town Cafe.  Their soup is always a treat.  Dennis decided to go visiting afterwards.  There is a group of his friends that all live in the same apartment complex.  His visits are always welcomed as most are not as agile as Dennis is.  At 82, I would agree he is agile and he and his little red pickup do get around.

I turned the lights on in the sewing studio.  Picked around with this and that.  I can’t really see well enough after the cataract surgery to strike out on getting anything under the needle as yet.  Apparently there is good reason to not get excited about new lens for the glasses as the eyes still have some acclimating to do on their own.  It is actually the brain that is in the driver’s seat.

Carrie had brought the towels for the skate club project.  I couldn’t help but cut open one of the three bags to take a gander at the quality I would be working with.  Carrie said they were the cheapest on Amazon she could find. The towels are to be given to the members to wipe the skates after they come off the ice.  I’ll be jiggered . . . they are plush and lofty.  Carrie had washed them and dried them, so at one point they will be ready to go . . . all 80 of them.

Megans-ProjectSupplies-for-towelsO.K., O.k., I had to take one towel and put it under the hoop.  I am so curious as to the stabilizer that I have, if it will work.  I do know that with them being so plush, the top will have to have the support of the thin film to allow the stitches to remain on top and not get buried in the nap.  My plan is to make one run and use that same towel to continue runs on the length of it until I have the right scenario.  I did do a sample at the time I got the digitized logo and that is the one finished in the hoop.  That was done on lightweight cotton.

So my day of futzing has gone well.  I hope your day has gone well also.

    Pulling in Opposite Directions

Dennis has gotten news that is sister at Alexander, age 88, was not doing well.  Cancer was found and she is not strong enough to undergo any type of treatment.  There was an offer of us going along with Dennis’ daughter and her husband to visit.

Today was my first appointment to see the eye specialist since the cataract surgery.  I needed to keep that appointment.  Gong forward I know that I will need new lens in my glasses.  This was the beginning of that process. I had to give Dennis a hug and a peck to send him off, with me staying behind.

It was planned that the trip would begin at 6:30 a.m. sharp.  At the allotted time it was raining pitchforks.  Surprisingly . . . it had been raining heavily since five this morning and continued until eight.  A total of three inches on top of the three quarters we had gotten from the Saturday storm.  I call that down right soggy.

We actually had a band of wild turkeys walking across our yards at noon.  Straggly looking things.  Where had they been flooded out of.  Naw . . . none of them would have made even a poor plucking for a roaster.

Chiropractors do not shake their fingers at patients.  I got the drift from his eyes when I went to see him this afternoon.  They were piercing.  Yes, the branch picking up scenario of the Saturday storm was a lot of repetitive hunching of the shoulders with the neck in a less than good position.  I willingly took an acupuncture treatment.  I will . . . and I repeat . . . I will be good for the next two and half weeks until I go back to see him.  Dennis has an exercise to do with me each evening and I will find that dang old heating pad.

Dennis just got home from seeing his sister.  He and I will get caught up from being pulled in two directions for the day.  Dennis and I will be going back to see her this weekend.  I did feel bad for not making the trip today.  His sister has always been a kind sister-in-law.

The rest of the week lay ahead and I do believe St. James is off the weather radar for a spell.  Whoopee!

    On to a New Outlook

Our acre is back to looking fantastic.  All remains of the Saturday night storm have been taken care of.  All that does remain is taking it easy on the bodies that sucked it up and cleared up the debris.  Dennis and I did well.

Today was my trip to Mankato to meet with my stitching friends.  I will admit when I rolled out of bed this morning I was slow moving as the body wasn’t in gear as yet.  I did wake up with a new outlook for the day. Being with others that share my interest in all things with thread and fuzz is enjoyable.  In all years I had never put my toe out to be a part of a group.  It does bring additional perspective to my day-to-day life.  It is important to have balance.  All the years I worked, I worked.  All along I kept my passion for sewing intact, but did it solo.  I now realize the wealth that people who share a kindred spirit bring.

I will share that the trailer never showed up to haul the remainder of the tree mess to the tree dump.  When I had left for Mankato Dennis was sure the trailer would be here any minute . . . not!  While Dennis was in the patio porch in his favorite rocker, he had noticed a pickup go up Stauffer Avenue slowly.  It turned around in our east drive and came back slower yet.  Dennis’ son-in-law was stopping at all the various piles of limbs and beginning the task of loading them onto his pickup.  Dennis and Thomas worked together and took things slowly and made five trips to the tree dump.  Very special.  Special indeed.

Dennis does not hold back when a favor is asked of him by his family.  Today was a great pay-back that was never envisioned.

No doubt Dennis is weary this evening, but he takes pride that the acre looks just as smart as it always has.  He had even gotten the rider mower out to chop up the leaf tips that had been left behind.  Priceless.

    A Short Night

Our plan was to sleep in this morning.  We had a great family day yesterday.  Great visiting and the best part was we had safe travels.

I did get up at midnight last night as my cell phone went off warning of a severe storm heading our way.  By one in the morning, I was going from window to window checking the nighttime.  The wind was swirling the rain so hard, I had no chance of being able to look out any of the windows regardless of the direction.  I checked on Dennis and he was sound asleep.  I didn’t wake him, no point in us tripping over each other checking out what we couldn’t even see.

This morning, the damage was assessed.  The first think I did was check the roof of the house.  Unbelievable that the roof had stayed on.  We have a house width awning on the west side of the house and it had held firm.  I am a strong believer that our over-sized shrub and the ancient evergreen takes the brunt of winds from the northwest.

Tree-DamageWhen I had first gotten up, I did look out the east window.  I could see from the bathroom window that there was a huge limb that had been torn off of the Maple.  Did it take out the potting shed or brake the patio slider windows?  I let Dennis take the lead.  By the grace of God, there was a tremendous amount of tree damage, but none to our structures.  A fellow came and with his chainsaw and sliced through various sizes.  His deal is he cuts and trims but does not clean up.  That’s fine with us.

It is now going on suppertime.  The day has been spent picking up branches and piling them up.  We have a windrow of the large chunks.  Maybe someone will come by and take them for their own use.  Who knows!  The entire back yard was full of twigs and branches the size of my thumb or larger.  Sure can’t mow over them.  I still bend pretty darn good at the waist.  I cleared out the immediate backyard first by making piles next to Stauffer Avenue.  I then ventured east to the rest of the acre.   Once I had cleared an area at a time, Dennis got the rider mower out and took care of all the leaf tips.  It looked as if someone had had a belly full of them in an airplane and continued to sift them out and let them float to the ground.

As I said.  The day is soon to be put to bed and I am sure Dennis and I will sleep well tonight.  We have a trailer coming tomorrow to load up all the debris and take it to the tree dump.  That’s for another day and perhaps another story.

    A Wonderful Day!

Today was a day to get caught up with family from far and near.  The St. Matthew church south of Brownton was the center of the activity.  Many of the cousins, plus cousins twice removed and even three cousins thrice removed, aka: Megan, William and Heighly.  It was a day of relaxed visiting.  Of course there was plenty of food to go around.

I am talked out and am going to take the evening doing a recap in my mind of all the family members I visited with and finding out what had transpired in their world since we had met three years ago.  Maybe do this again in several years.

    A Day Similiar

My activities today were reminiscent of times past when I spent quite a few hours in the kitchen getting ready to feed a group.

Long about 1989 the county accountant, Perry Shroeder, proposed a what if to me.  The employees owned the pop machine in the courthouse and the resources were getting substantial.  What if we put on a noon luncheon for all the county employees.  I was game to do it.

After we had agreed on a date, Perry arranged for the county garage to be cleared out and swept out during a time from eleven to one.  The library, county highway shop, human service crew all had fluctuating noon hours. The garage was a stone’s throw from the courthouse.  The custodial department volunteered to get the tables and seating arranged.

We have a wonderful Chinese restaurant in town.  I visited with Kun Hung and he said he would  take care of everything and bring the food.  We agreed on the price per person.  I mentioned to him we could have plenty of crock pots on hand to keep the variety of rice hot.  Kun’s response was memorable . . . “No, no.  No crockka pots.” Kun arrived with the portable steam ovens.  The first employee noon lunch was a huge success.  It was wonderful for employees to visit with each other from other departments.  All we had in common to that point was that our W2 forms came from the same place.  That was the first of many total county employee noon meals.

Perry and I tried to involve more people to ramrod the meals but it didn’t pan out.  One instance that I recall was that someone from the courts volunteered to bring the sauerkraut for the grilled link brats.  It was enough for maybe eight people and we were set up for 90 people.  A dash to the grocery store and a visit to the extension’s kitchen saved our butts.  That did the buddy thing for the events.  If I did it on my own, I knew there would be no panic at the designate date or time.

Perry and I took care of the noon lunches until I retired in 1999.  We did one hell of a blow out once each summer.  It made for great camaraderie and great memories.  Ten summers of people getting together.  Priceless.

Today I was in my totally cleaned kitchen and prepared food for a family gathering tomorrow.  It is the family of my father’s family of eight siblings. It is the Wendlandt family.  There is one of the originals left . . . Aunt Janet at age 88.  It is so special to me that Carrie’s and Kevin’s will be there.  That was all I needed to be aware of and I volunteered to bring enough of the pass around dishes for all of us.  How could I not!  I made sure that family favorites were prepared.

It’s just about supper time and I am totally ready with the food, the list, and the mode of transportation for the food.  It will be about a 75-80 mile trip and the food needs to arrive in good stead.  This is the peace that passes all understanding.  One sad note is that Mom’s family picked the same date for the Riebe family gathering.  It was first come first serve.  Perhaps the next one Dennis and I will be able to attend.

    A Choice of Two

This morning we had choices.  Well . . . not really.  But each of us had an agenda.  One for Dennis and one for me.  I knew I had the winner.  Dennis needed to go out and meet with a dietitian.

Dennis’ tests are always pre-diabetic.  There needed to be someone on one and I was not one of those ones.

My lot for the day was cleaning the kitchen range from top to bottom.  My task was much more desirable than Dennis’.  I am amazed how many parts can be taken off and managed at the kitchen sink.  Of course a few older towels hit the floor to mop up my sploshing and splashing.  I used a lot of Kevin’s Fresh Start solution to help cut the grease.  Yes . . . I said grease.  It can get and stay in the least accessible places.  It doesn’t help when a kettle or two may have boiled over since the last time the cleaning lady was on board.  Getting into the far corners of the oven was a challenge.  I took lots of breaks.  For days such as this, I long for the Sears upright range and oven that Orlin had bought when we first moved to Texas.  Full sized oven and broiler at eye level.  Covered pull out range top with lots of storage underneath.  By noon I was done and Dennis came home about that same time.

Lots on information on fact sheets for my ole cowboy.  I know it isn’t in his wheelhouse.  Yes . . . I am the one that does the cooking.  I am satisfied with salads.  Dennis is not.  There will be more baked chicken which Dennis is not a fan of.  I won’t be nagging him, but I will be encouraging him.  I will also cut back on baking.  It doesn’t have to change overnight, but one step at a time.  Dennis is fond of making pasta hotdishes but I will be seeking out some boxed pastas that I know are made of cauliflower, to lower the gluten amounts.  Time will tell as I am not going to be in favor of ignoring this and having more meds for Dennis.

It turned out to be a great day with both of our objectives being met . . . eye to eye, nose to nose and toe to toe.  Maybe tomorrow the choices for each of us will be more desirable.
