So little snow remains in the sheltered areas of the gardens. The ground is very soft, and according to the garage kitten’s paws when they return to the porch, very muddy. Most likely, if I were more up to par, I would have muddy shoes to add to the mix, as it would be hard not to walk to the backyards to check out the remains of winter.

As I enjoyed my rocker in the porch, I left the east patio door cracked a bit and for three hours Butter Ball and Snuggles were in their glory coming in and out at will. Several times, Snuggles executed perfect tumble moves as he batted about dry leaves that the breeze was taking across the patio. I had taken an extra blanket out to the rocking chair and I did doze off several times. The birds singing, sunshine abound and the antics of the kittens were the perfect tranquil setting for good rest needed for recovery.

As I trolled on the Internet for information on shingles, I do know that it will be some time before I know if there are lasting effects to deal with. Several articles mentioned continued fatigue, pin pricks felt in the areas where the shingle blisters were or actual ghost pains. Why would I worry about things yet to be and miss out on these first great days of the spring to come.

It’s about suppertime and I think that calls for a bowl of soap and some fruit. Yup, Stauffer Avenue is still pretty great.

I think I can finally believe that spring is coming. 50 degrees beckoned me out to the garage porch and my rocker. I have big shoes to fill for the next week or so as Dennis and a life long friend, Lyle, left this morning for Nevada to each see their sons. The cats are going to, for sure, miss Dennis. His one-on-one conversations with each of them would have been quite the tapes to have listened to, if recorded. I assured him I would take care of myself until the little red pickup comes up the driveway and he is safe and sound.

Lots of short naps today. The wind chimes in the Evergreen on the northwest corner of the house had a lulling effect. The wind gusts played the evergreen boughs much like a fine tuned musical instrument. This case of shingles is for sure going to be beaten down.

I am so thankful that we have our garage porch. My favorite wooden rocker is in the porch and it was a blessing to have another spot to try and rock away some of the discomfort of the shingles. What helps is that Snuggles likes to curl up on my lap, purring incisively to make everything better. Who knew there could be so many parts of the body affected by shingles. It is 8:45 p.m. and I am trying to prolong going to bed. It has been many nights of being wide awake every several hours. I have been napping at a moments notice, and today I tried to suck it up and stay awake for longer periods of time. Dennis had a great idea of having soup for supper and that sat fairly good on the stomach, but did not alleviate the nausea or headache. All in do time. Patience, patience.

Headaches come far and few in between with me. Carrie has commented in the past as to how seldom I get sick to my stomach or have the flu. I hit the jackpot. I have a humdinger of a headache with a stomach that feels like it should be fed, but I had better not, right now . . . plus I have the shingles virus. A trip to Urgent Care took away any doubt of it last night. So which side of my torso is effected? They begin in the armpit of my right arm and travel all the way down to my thumb.

I do have a prescription to help contain more of the blisters from blooming. Some of the side effects range from feeling lethargic, feeling restless and sleep may be hard to come by. It is a blessing that our home is only 720 square feet. My choices of ricocheting off the walls is slim to none. In three weeks the blisters should subside and more will be known if there are lasting effects from the virus. On the up side, spring temps are on their way and that brings good feelings regardless of the bumps in the road.

It was not to be that we would be getting a huge amount of snow. If we got a half inch that might be stretching it. On the other hand the wind has been moving the new snow around and as it swipes across the drive and sidewalk it is slippery. Time to curl the toes and hang on.

It Was Hard To Take In

Last night 60 Minutes did a segment on Lumber Liquidators and their laminate flooring.  Their huge profit gains were admired both by investors and other entities similar to them.  Upon investigation their suppliers included several in China.  The labeling indicated that it has passed regulations that were acceptable for exporting.  The key component that needs strict guidelines was formaldehyde for health safety problems occurring in regard to respiratory issues. In this segment the shipments were made to Lumber Liquidators as the port of entrance in California.

To make a long story short, the hidden camera and reporting team found out that all of the labels on the crates for shipment to Lumber Liquidators stated a safe level of formaldehyde when in essence they did not.  Those in charge within the factories were very open that the labels were purposefully mis-representing the formaldehyde.

For me this was personally hard to take in.  I could not believe that the blatant disregard of safety for families using products such as these in their homes is still going on.  In 1973, Orlin and I had purchased a 14′ x 80’mobile home for our family . . . our growing family.  The mobile home was put on the site in October and our third child was due mid-December.  It totally had the “new” smell as all of the interior walls were of laminate paneling.  As we settled in, nothing was thought of it other than it called for windows to be cracked to help elevate the strong smell of the formaldehyde.  Generally the home was closed up to accommodate cool to cold temperatures.

If the pregnancy had not been going so on target, we would have postponed the move.  All markers for the first seven months indicated a healthy mother and a healthy baby.  In December, the visits to the doctor became those of concern.  The funeral for baby Scott Howard was on what would have been his birthday, December 13th.

It was not unusual in the headlines and news casts to come that there were concerns being levied in regard to the use of paneling containing high levels of formaldehyde.  Was anything ever proven?  No.  In my heart, I believe that the vapors within the mobile home put me at high risk of the air I was taking in during those last months of pregnancy and how if affected the baby as well as six year old Kevin dealing with asthma.

Here we are 40 years later and there has been little done to insure that products are what they  profess to be or that they have passed code safety standards.  Consumers are still putting their family’s health at risk for the all mighty dollar that companies like Lumber Liquidators are taking in.  Ironically, Lumber Liquidators are now crying that they were totally unaware.  I don’t believe that.  There is so much now known about health conditions as it relates to the air we breath, but we still need to rely on hidden cameras and reporting crews to bring out the real truth.  Something really smells in the regulatory process.

The sun is out and at five this afternoon it is 30 degrees. I may add that Dennis did fantastic last night for supper. Obviously, jellied cranberries are always good and they really topped off the small steak wrapped in bacon over a slow heat. Yup, he did good. Many people mention that as soon as an appliance’s warranty is expired, a new unit is bound to be needed. I can tell you my dishwasher has been going great guns for decades. I love seeing Dennis’s hand immersed in bubbles. Dennis is always on board to get those dishes done and put away. Our home is small and things always go better to get the dining room table cleared to make room for the rest of the story.

It’s a goofy day. The sun was out for a time and all looked promising for March 1st. The clouds moved in and the earth shoke a bit as Dennis declared he is making supper. The statement I made about no harm coming to either of us if we skipped a meal . . . didn’t fly. One of his offering is jellied cranberries. Time will tell and I will just sit on my hands and let it all play out. Oh, that’s right I can’t sit on my hands as my thumb on my right hand has been in a “charlie horse” mode for some time this afternoon. Arthritis must be making a play on yet another joint.
