Today Dennis had his luncheon in Mankato with the Korean War Veterans Association. Their chapter is known and registered as “The Frozen Chosen.” Once a month they meet for lunch and a short business meeting. This summer they were represented in several summer parades with a float that the fellows have put together, pulled by a real deal Jeep from that area. I so applaud his attendance as it gives Dennis a chance to meet and stay in contact with fellows from all walks of life with a common denominator. It was a good day.

Dennis enjoyed one of his requested suppers: biscuits and gravy. A tube of 8 biscuits to bake, a half dozen precooked Jimmy Dean sausage patties cut up and a package of white gravy mix with two cups of water. The topping: ketchup. It’s okay, once in a great while, but I could not help but wonder about . . . the nutritional value, which from my calculation, was nonexistent. As I said, once in a great while. I now have the Brussel Sprout card to play. Paybacks are hell.

True to my blog of yesterday, today Dennis and I took a road trip. As we saw combines out in the bean fields, we started reminiscing about the days that Dennis farmed with his uncle and I was at the elbow of my parents on the farm. We reached a destination down the highway that was our “turn around.” Checking on new construction could be an old occupational hazard. On the way home everything that we took in on our trip made my heart happy and I will be smiling for some time to come.

Job Jar Tapped Again
We hear so many people our age talk about the need to find things to do. When they come up empty handed and congregate at McDonald’s or the Home Town Cafe for coffee, they find the conversation less than satisfying. If perchance they drive by and see us out and about in the yard you sure get to hear about that as well as having them stop in and then not knowing when to leave. Dennis and I must be odd. We give ourselves lots of opportunity to play, whether it is taking a weekend road trip or a drive in the convertible . . . after some local effort has been applied.
Today the temperature is 81, but there is a dry breeze and it’s very conducive for some local effort. The car and pickup garages were totally emptied so there could be some sifting and sorting going on. Most of the summer gardening tools went back to the potting shed and things like the snow scoops got front and center on the wall pegs.
Dennis washing off grime and cob webs from the garage porch.
I can only imagine what people contend with when they live next to a lake in regard to spider webs and such. Right here in suburbian St. James they are a fright. Out came the hose with a soap dispenser added, and Dennis was on the garage porch walls. With the walls and patio doors and screens washed off it will make it so much easier to go back and do some Windex on the glass. We spend so much time in the porch that it is a treat to look out of clean windows. Dennis lit the pilot light of the gas furnace in the garage and gave that a test run to make sure it will kick in without a hitch when needed. Are we spoiled . . . heck yes and we intend on staying that way. Need things to do? Better not ask the two older ones on Stauffer Avenue, you might just get an ear full. Let’s hear it for the local effort of Stauffer Avenue.

Dennis made a comment today that I would have to agree with. His observation is that both of us being in good health, we are feeling our oats to a greater degree than we did last fall as far as yard work and fall cleaning is considered, or we got an exceptional bottle of multi-vitamins. I am not knocking it one way or the other. it feels great to be on top of the real estate. Go “older ones.”

Our neighbor, Bob, has a fire ring that he lets us use. Today, it was a day to tidy up the shrubs and trees with literally, dead wood. Nothing says supper like leftovers for two older ones on Stauffer Avenue that always seem to find things to stay busy. We are good stewards of our home.

The trip to the metro went smoothly yesterday. We dodged the early traffic and well as the afternoon rush. Dennis has had the last of the Vascular tests and now we wait for the Radiology Department to forward the info to Dennis’ doctor. It doesn’t hurt to anticipate the future, so today we tackled things out in the yard that needed us to work together and flex our backs as we tackled a few things. A good day as we swept the yards of garden art and closed the potting shed doors. The patio umbrella and chairs need to stay out in the anticipation of many nice sunny warm days to come.

An early blog on this Monday as we are heading to the Vascular Department at the VA in Minneapolis. Dennis’ 78th birthday is coming up and he knows he wants to continue enjoying day to day life. The legs may need some stints for better circulation and that will be determined in some on going tests today.
On the flip side I could use a bit of quiet time as I took a tumble yesterday in the potting shed. Just tripped over my own feet. As I was in flight I manipulated the old body so neither the shoulders or the knees took the full brunt of the tumble and it became a soft fall. I am sure the site of me getting back upright would have been enough to bring chuckles. A bit stiff with one or two small bruises, but all is working just fine. A few extra spins on the exercise bike this morning helped the mobility. Catch ya later.
