    A Family Gathering

    Riebe Cousins

    Several of Martha Riebe’s Grandchildren

Today, at Cactus Jack’s in Stewart, Minnesota, some members of my Grandmother Martha Boelter Riebe’s family gathered.  My mother, Lena Riebe Wendlandt, was the third oldest of eight children.  All of Martha’s eight children are deceased.  It was a grand time of chatting over lunch, catching up with everyone.  This photo is of my first cousins that were able to attend.  These individuals represented children of five of Martha’s children.

In the photo, left to right: Dorthy, daughter of Gertie; Vernie, son of Wilfred; Elvera and Noreen, daughters of Lena; Irene, daughter of Gilbert; Janet, daughter of Norman; and Roy, son of Gertie.  Many siblings of those pictured were unable to attend.  Martha had a total of 27 grandchildren.

This morning the heavy April snow was expected but the amount was still a surprise.  Dennis opted to let the snow go just as it had come – one hour at a time as the sun came out this afternoon.  It still is covering the back yards but the hard surface of the concrete drive is bare and dry in spots.  If memory serves me last April the amount of snow was close to 15-17 inches.  I vote that this be the last.  I am getting itchy to be out in the yards peering into the soil for the first of the perennials to poke through.  They have rested enough.

Today was catch-up day after a whirl wind of activities with Granddaughter Megan during the time she was here during her spring school break.  The Swifer picked up lots of threads from the sewing machines that somehow had escaped the waste basket.  Odds and ends of fabrics were put back into their respective colored totes until the next great project unfolds.  For this Grammie I am going to go back to working on the “forgotten attic afghan.”  As long as we are experiencing cool weather I am more likely to endure the afghan as it becomes larger and heavier as more yarn is spun into it than the warmer spring temps that are bound to come sooner or later. Catch ya later.

My Sewing Partner’s Vacation Is Over

    Megan's labor of love (400x300)

Megan’s first labor of love goes to her brother Nicholas

Today Granddaughter Megan’s spring vacation here on Stauffer Avenue has come to an end. From rural Stauffer Avenue she is headed back to Eden Prairie southwest of the metro.  How wonderful that at the age of 10 she still enjoys blending right in to our home and our schedules.

When Megan first arrived she announced she had a plan to make a blanket for her six-year-old brother.  We have made one together in the past for her, but I believe she had forgotten how long we worked at it.  We had a window of four days and Megan and I agreed we were not going to be like the sewers in China by working day and night. Of course the big surprise was that she was handed over her very own foot control to her very own sewing machine.  Lots of hugs ensued. After Megan had drawn out on paper how she wanted the blanket to look it became my job to find the fabrics and supplies in my stashes.

Sleeping in was the first order of business followed by taking time for a French Toast breakfast while watching an episode of Scooby Doo on the cartoon channel.  It was totally hands on after that.  Megan experienced the challenges of threading the sewing machine and getting the bobbin wound.  I cannot believe how quickly she took to it.  I was a bit jealous at how easily she could thread the needle — steady hands and her little nose right up close and personal.

As each step was completed, “quality control” was asked to leave the work site as this was a teaching, as well as a learning, experience.  There are many projects ahead to learn the theology of perfect seams.  The smiles from Megan as she saw progress were more rewarding that any W-2 Form job could provide.

Megan putting out a little help for the birds (400x300)

The birds will have lots of bright materials for their new nests

It wasn’t all work and no play.  Megan poked into a supply of yarn and we agreed some of the yarn balls were too small to make anything good but they sure would work for making snippets of yarn for the birds to find as the nest building season was just getting started.  As luck would have it, the early spring weather was chilly enough that winter coats were still needed.  Not all the quilt batting went into Nicholas’ blanket.  Though the snow is gone there are tufts of white in our yards.  What bird wouldn’t like to have a bit of soft batting to weave into the their new home?

While goodbyes were said today to Megan, Nicholas is going to be watching his schedule for his time to visit Grandpa Dennis and me.  We will find out what his wish list is for the visit and the planning will begin.  This is a full service activity center.  After all, Megan says my basement craft area is just as good as what the Michael’s stores have to offer.  It’s a good thing.

In life, please give and have no memory of it, or take and remember it always.

What a great day for a birthday

    Dueling Sewing Machines (400x300)

Megan and Grandma sewing away while
    enjoying Grandma’s 70th birthday.

What a great day for a birthday.  We dined on good ole French Toast this morning before we made plans for the day.

Megan has developed a great passion for sewing.  Her plans for this stay includ doing something special for her brother Nicholas.  How wonderful that I had a sewing machine ready to be her very own.  It happens to be an exact duplicate of the machine I have been using and the one Megan learned to sew on several years ago.

Once we had the plans laid out as to which one of us would be doing what, it was “power switches on.”

Grandpa snapped several photos of us as we proceeded to make head ways.  I think Nicholas will be surprised.  More updates will follow.

This is going to be short and sweet…

This is going to be short and sweet as grand daughter Megan is here to share some of her spring break with us.  We got home about four and we have been making up for lost time.  Grandpa Dennis made supper and also did the dishes.  The sweetest thing was having Megan and Grandpa sing Happy Birthday to me before we shared cupcakes.  Megan and I agreed that no good cupcake is not without a few crumbs to enjoy dabbing them up with our fingers.  I have been told that since tomorrow is my birthday I get to sleep in.  Catch ya all later.

    What a Great Sunny Day

    Three Siblings

Noreen, Calvin and Elvera enjoying the spring day

What a great sunny day. We hit 45 degrees with the birds chirping as I have not heard for a long, long time.  Today was a special day as family members popped in for a visit.  With lots of coffee and food the flow of conversation was continuous.  As our families have taken on extended family members, the visits between the siblings has become less and less.   My sister Elvera lives in Stewart Minnesota, and my brother Calvin Wendlandt lives in Decorah, Iowa.  We were missing my brother Michael Wendlandt that lives in the rural Stewart area.  He has just completed radiation and chemo and is resting for the next of scheduled appointments.  Out of site, but surely not out of mind.  Our photographers for the day were hubby Dennis and Calvin’s wife Lois.  Good job!  Today with the spring breeze the sun felt warmer than it has for a long time.  Life on Stauffer is sweet.

This morning I ignored seeking out what the temperature was outside.  In total bliss I did what I enjoy doing when I have my first cup of coffee and have missed doing so. Cup in hand and clothed in my robe I walked out onto the patio and beyond seeing what my backyard had to offer.  I had not done that since sometime in the late fall or early winter.  It was important to stay upright on my two feet and I had given in to snow and ice.  Since what seemed to be forever I had depended on the view from my bathroom window to keep an eye on the yard to the east.  Today set the precedence for all the tomorrows of this spring.  On my way back to the house to get a refill of coffee I realized that all that had been a puddle yesterday afternoon was now thick with ice.  So be it — I’m back!

    Fleeting Thoughts:

Not too much time for thoughts.  The sound of pitter patter made me dash to check the down spouts on the house. The thawing of the snow went so smoothly there has yet to be a threat of water seepage into the northeast corner of the basement.  Forecasts did say that this rain shower could become more than what I was caught in as I checked all corners.  Better to be safe than sorry.
