    Deemed a Good Day

    Threads (Mobile)

Out with cardboard shoe boxes for thread storage. These larger cones of thread have been a gift from a cherished friend. Surfing Amazon . . . amazing what can be found. No more reaching for a cone of thread and knocking many to the floor. Love it!

    Dennis Cat2 (Mobile)

    Dennis & Cat (Mobile)

I had the back door propped open to take out some extra shelving and such from the basement. Snuggles didn’t miss a beat to sneak into the house. He would have stayed on Dennis’ lap purring his heart out if left on his own. He goes from the merciless squirrel and rabbit killer to a cat that still needs some one-on-one loving.

Time to Deal With All Things Dear to Me

Yesterday and today I have received parcels via UPS and the USPS,  containers that will be evident in my soon-to-be sewing studio.  Everything is shaping up in the basement since the window project. The best thing was when I looked out this early afternoon and the Epileptic had picked up our huge stash that we had left on the curb. The second best was having the garbage man come today. Our bin was overflowing. Oh, if he only knew I had several bags tucked back in the basement, ready to put in as soon as the bin was empty.

The basement project has been exhausting, exhilarating and sentimental all at the same time. I chose wisely on the items I let go of. In the last several years I have run across a television show of individuals that had called for help to reduce the amount that was in their homes, thus not allowing full utility and easy of access. The object was to select the size of containers that the home could easily accommodate for collections, hobbies, items to be used in the operations of the home. Then came the time to either toss, recycle or put in the “keepers” bin of the most useful. I found that exercise to be of a huge help.

When I was growing up, Mom always was on the lookout for things for us kids to play with or use. It was usual that when someone in the family was going to put up another layer of wallpaper in a new exciting pattern, there were always scraps of paper in order to make the floral patterns look seamless. Mom came home with scraps of those wallpapers that we could then use the backside of for our own drawings, art and even practicing math. Bits of leftover fabrics from Mom sewing our clothing was put in a basket to use for quilts. Even when clothing was worn, believe me there was always a part that was still quite vibrant to add to the quilting basket. I grew up happily being able to “waste not, want not.”

And . . . here I am some 70 years later having to deal with that which is needed and what could and more importantly should be parted with. I can say that I am on the downhill slide to having dealt with every aspect of my hobbies. The fabric sorting is well under way. I can do this and I will enjoy my sewing studio oh so much more. Yes, I do cherish families of my friends that no longer sew or the stashes of those who have passed. More importantly I need to hang on to what I want to work with and keep “me” in my projects.

    The Tables are Turned

    Home 9

Literally . . . the tables in the basement have been turned. Total access for the coming sewing studio season. Nothing is yet where the final resting place will be. All the shelves have been cleared and washed down and placement is now at random. I remember several Christmases ago we gave Carrie and Kevin music boxes and I had purchased containers at Hobby Lobby that totally folded down when not in use. On ebay, with free shipping, I have containers in two sizes coming. At that time I will be getting down to business for placement of items. The tables are a perfect place to let it all hang out as the new containers find their contents. I know I said yesterday nothing would be out in the open. Silly ole me. The south wall will be a place for special glass items and items that I will enjoy looking at and won’t mind dusting. Where my red chair is located, that will be where my sewing machine will be. At this time I have decided to use the church tables, thus having an area to attach the embroidery unit when I want to use it. There will be several small tables that perhaps won’t have to be herded around near the sewing machine. Paring down! The new sewing studio is getting closer. By the way, the basement effort is closing down early as I want to make Dennis’ favorite supper for his birthday. Happy Birthday Dennis!

No such thing as “same old, same old” here in the basement on Stauffer Avenue. Right now there is no sewing studio. What we are striving for is a more orderly area that will deserve to be a sewing studio. Oh my gosh! Every container, every little cute box and every plastic envelope is being looked at. What makes the cut is in a covered container and there is a label on the outside of it. Granted, now more than ever there shouldn’t be a problem with dust . . . dirty dust that is. Now, lint . . . that’s a whole other situation when it comes to fabrics and threads.

I don’t want to repeat this in just as many years in the future as it has been for so, so many years in the past. Enough already. By the way . . . why wouldn’t marbles be better stored in blue glass Mason fruit jars rather than an open basket. Dah!

I Didn’t Seek and Search in the Right Places

November of 2015 is when we purchased my new sewing machine.  Guaranteed lessons could be given at any time by appointment.  With it being a 120 miles round trip, I haven’t as yet asked for a lesson.  I easily learn by reading and by trial and error.  There have not been very many projects that hit the circular bin due to operator error.

Just yesterday I was sharing the time I spent on getting conversion printout charts for my files in regard to the best thread colors to use when embroidering.  Obviously, we would be traveling back and forth to the sewing machine shop for the machine to have regular checkups and have the firmware updated, so I began using the brand of thread that the shop sold.  Isacord it is.

    Embroidery 1 (440x330)

PES is core-spun threads by the Mettler manufacturer.  This chart can be scrolled through until all 14 colors have been shown and ideally identified by a code.

Sometimes in the homes of retirees, it gets quiet.  It gets really quiet when Dennis is under the weather. It is no more than right that when he is resting in his recliner that I keep the noise and commotion down to a dull roar.  As I was cleaning up some fuzz and threads in the sewing studio I picked up the huge manual that came with the sewing machine, mainly to dust it off.  In the quiet of the house I sat down and began going through it, page by page by page.  Hump . . . I don’t ever remember seeing that little symbol on the sewing machine.  What?  It does what?  At the time the embroidery unit is ready to begin stitching there is a panel of the colors as it works its way through the design from the first to the last color.  The colors represent the code number of choice from the origination of the design pattern.  For 22 months I have been needing to take the time to look up conversion charts for each and every embroidery project that was not a product of Bernina and then having to find the Isacord color closest for a match.  Apparently Isacord is “in like” with Bernina.

    Embroidery 2 (440x330)

There in all its glory is the correct code and the name of the thread color for my Isacord thread.

Well, shucky darn.  I put my pointy little pencil on that semi-circular design and there is a built-in conversion chart for 35 different brands of thread.  It was a good thing I had my mouth shut or I would have dropped my teeth.  I felt elated, I felt embarrassed and I felt a bit ashamed.  So . . . .why can’t this sewing machine wash my windows? The saving gift of hours of time that sometimes made the difference of “do I really want to stitch it out when I could find an easier design?”  I love reading.  Why hadn’t I read the manual from cover to cover to begin with.  In all honesty there was, and is, so much detail in this machine, I learned and dealt with the situations as they arose.  Today felt like Christmas.  Yesterday I was at a point that the color charts almost had me whipped.  Today was just the right time for me to get better acquainted with my purchase.

There are some things in the horizon with the embroidery aspect of the machine that I will attend a class or two.  It will involve software that will enable me to choose any pattern that I currently have and add script.  It will all be laid out on my laptop as a total project, loaded onto a flash drive and then loaded onto the sewing machine.  Currently, I have had to measure once, measure twice to make sure the script is centered above the design while the hoop is on the embroidery module.  Currently I have limited fonts and can only do one line at a time.  The number of fonts in the new software is endless and the number of lines of script will only be limited by the size of the hoop that I choose per project.  There was a trial that I could download for a month.  I worked with what they allowed and it was pretty amazing.

I enjoy pushing my limits in life.  I enjoy trying for new adventures . . . and I do mean try hard.  This has been another satisfying day in the life of the retirees here on Stauffer Avenue.  It would be better if Dennis could just shake this summer cold before the weather becomes colder.

Ya, it was a bit cool this morning so I wore long pants for my walk. My knees felt like they were smothering. The walking shorts are not done for the season, I’m just picking and choosing on a day by day basis.

A challenge with machine embroidery comes about when companies that you purchase designs from have multiple brands of thread they may favor to use in their creations to obtain the finished product. The design is downloaded and as the embroidery unit begins sewing, a coordinating color is requested. I spent some time this afternoon on the computer printing out color charts from various companies. Nothing like having some prep work before it’s needed.

I have started a shopping list. White cotton socks for myself is “major” on the list. In a time past I bought socks. Hmm, it was a good buy. Yup, they were white and in the shopping basket they went. Ugh! They were a poly/cotton blend. No cotton socks on my tootsies this last season. No matter how you try your very best of the Martha Stewart laundry tips, they are not going to come out white. I admit I may be out on the patio in stocking feet. Who has time to put on shoes every time you turn around. Wearing shoes that are not high tops lets in all sorts of dirt while gardening. Bleach and poly blend fabrics come out yellow. I want my socks coming out of the laundry as white as Dennis’.

Oh for challenges. It sure keeps my days interesting.

Today I had the best of the day during my walk this morning. It has since been gloomy, with rain every once in awhile. I came back from the grocery store a bit ago and it was quite cool. I still had my walking shorts on but a few of the other older folks had jackets, and I mean real jackets that I might drag out in December.

It was a good day to work with my embroidery files. There are just a few too many flash drives on the shelf by the sewing machine. It was time to tidy them up onto the Bernina Flash Drive. Tidily named files makes it easy to scope out what I am looking for.

When Lorraine was here I had downloaded some embroidery pattern that she wanted to share with me. At the time I had loaded them on the SanDisk flash drive. Today was the day to get them on the Bernina flash drive. I was making great headways. A file for the “7 Days of Dishtowels” and a file for embroidering recipes on towels called “Recipe Towels.” All was going well. Just one more file and it was called “Cut Work.” Sitting at the computer in the living room, something distracted me and I looked up not realizing my left hand was hovering over the palm pad. I had opened a file from the SanDisk and all the EXP files were ready to move over to a document file and after that the Bernina flash drive would be loaded with them. As I looked up it took me awhile to realize what was blinking like crazy. Talk about speed. Wham . . . they were gone. Honest to God, I have yet to figure out just where the hand hover needs to be to initiate the deleting.

Needless to say there was a huge lesson learned for the remaining computer work. It has happened to me when typing for the daily blog that somewhere in that left hand hover, I would lose everything. I did ask the Geek Squad about disabling the palm pad 100% but that didn’t happen to be addressed at the last visit.

Live and learn. When walking, keep those steps high. When typing, keep that arthritic left hand high . . . or AWAY from the palm pad.

    A Day of Piddle

Sunday is the day of rest and then there is the old saying of “No rest for the wicked.”  I am not wicked just in need of having something to show for my day.

Much to my surprise I did get all of the videos and photos of the day we spent on the farm with the threshing event loaded on a flash drive to send to cousin Dan.  I had never attempted that process and it went pretty darn well. I have it ready for mailing.

Aunt Lorraine mentioned to me in a phone conversation that since her visit here in June, she would enjoy some extra items that I have in my fabric stashes.  Why not share!  I have the box ready for mailing.

There are days that I regret taking down the sewing studio to the bare concrete walls as early as I did.  I felt that if the target date for the window installation came about and something had caused me to not be ready, I would have felt crushed.  God forbid if someone else came in here and touched and packed up my stuff.

There is a beef roast doing a slow roast in the oven for supper and the extra time drove me down into the naked sewing studio.

I was able to get to a tote that held numerous old embroidery hoops either of plastic or wood.  Re-purposing is my all time favorite thing to do.  I have been able to have enough room in the sewing studio for the minimum square footage for the sewing machine and the embroidery unit. I have enjoyed piddling.

Old Hoops Wise Embroidery Megan'sToday with the extra time and energy I decided to put the embroidery projects into some of the hoops for the ability to have them as accents on a wall.  In time to come I know I will find the perfect ribbons from the “Kersten Stash” to use as the hangers themselves.

By the time the roast is done for supper, I will have burned off enough energy to enjoy a sit-to on the patio with Dennis.  Unfortunately the last several days have brought about mosquitoes and they are the smallest stinging buggers ever, but still not as bad as the black flies.  All in all it was a great piddle day.

I can report there was no storm on Stauffer Avenue yesterday in the late afternoon and evening. As time went on, I took all that was precious to me off of the walls in the living room in preparing for some fall cleaning.

As I took my walk this morning I laid out the plans for the day. I knew the load of laundry would be ready for the clothes dryer by the time I got home. What has been usual is that Dennis’ day doesn’t start until well after ten or eleven in the mornings. I make sure the house stays fairly quiet until then. What would I do if I didn’t have my sewing studio in the basement to either prepare a project or stitch a bit on an on-going project. It hasn’t been as comfortable in the studio since I have made room for the window replacement project. I could have waited until the last hour, but I do know that schedules can change and if our timeline was bumped up, I could have been caught in crunch time. I do not do well in crunch time. Better to be prepared. In between time I am working on preparing the octagon window for new primer and paint.

With everything pretty much moved to the center of the area it is giving me pause to give serious thought of making the space a bit handier when I can relocate items.  Always food for thought. I can attest to the fact that there is never a dull or boring day on Stauffer.

    Compromising is Tough

Eventually yard work is complete. It’s threatening rain outside and the sewing studio needs to be visited. While I am in a “hurry up and wait” process in our basement window project, large projects are on hold. I had decided I want to have a few finished embroidered items on hand for . . . whatever. Kitchen towels were my choice for today. The embroidery can run while I start a load of laundry or get something ready for supper.  As I was up and down the steps checking on the project I decided to make this the last trip and just stay close by. The red thread was the last of the color changes. Enjoying a bit of coffee I was content watching each letter to be sewn. Ops! the “d” didn’t look too good and the “C” was surelyKitchen Towel (Custom) off kilter. I apparently had not tightened the screw sufficiently holding the two portions of the hoop with the towel being held taught in between them. The stop button was pushed and I just sat and looked at the project for a while. The last few minutes of the project and it was bad. I was determined not to scrap the entire thing. I have learned that you never, ever take the project out of the hoop as the registry can never be duplicated. With the towel still in the hoop and tightening it, I could only hope. I took the hoop off of the machine and slowly started picking out way-ward stitches that had begun as the fabric had slipped. Good grief. So many tiny stitches and so close together. Ugh! I got all the stitches out less one grouping that threatened the fabric with a possible hole. When the hoop was put back on the machine, there was no way the word “Cookie” was going to be stitched where it rightfully belonged. There had been too much slack in the fabric by that time.  All I could do was forge ahead and let the stitching continue.

When Megan was around paper crafting and we had made a boo-boo, she would tell me, “Grammie, that’s what embellishments are for. We cover up the mistake.” Well, Megan, Grammie decided that I couldn’t shrink the area between the two words, so I put in an embellishment. I have decided that anyone getting involved in reading the recipe won’t take note . . . or the person wiping the dishes will have their own agenda.  Sometimes even the best intent in details needs to be compromised so the baby is not thrown out with the bath water.
