Today is a lazy day here on Stauffer Ave. We knew Dennis’ niece and his sister would be in town and we enjoyed some time catching up over a great noon lunch as to what has been happening their way in Alexandria. This evening was a great time for Dennis and me to clean up some left overs in the refrigerator. I would really enjoy someone coming and loading up my refrig with leftovers. Meals would be grazing rather than preparing followed by kitchen clean up. It’s very hot out with little breeze so I think I will do a bit of hand quilting on a wall hanging that is in progress. Catch ya later.

It’s been a good day. Dennis enjoyed his Korean Veteran’s monthly luncheon in Mankato and it gave me a chance to pick up a few groceries. Talk about a mob in the Hy-Vee. Dennis is going to have his favorite cold salad to enjoy on the 4th. Catch ya another time.

Low humidity and in the high 70’s – just about a perfect day if it were not for the biting bugs. It takes almost gale force winds to keep them at bay. I filled my pockets with a thimble, a spool of thread, scissors, needle and carried a quilting project to enjoy the breeze as it blew through the screen doors of the patio porch. It’s not quite like being outside but it sure beats the itches of those hungry bugs. A glass of iced tea will round out this afternoon quite nicely.

A great start to the day was a bridal shower for grand daughter Sadie. After three tours with the army she is going to have a great life. A bit of weeding while the wind was high enough to ward off bugs took me into the afternoon as I worked on the porch rockers a bit with steal wool to take out any air bubbles from the Teak oil. It always feels good to get a little physical each and every day.

A day to help out as Dennis decided new blades needed to be put on the rider mower. It should be just sweet if we continue mowing every week. Humidity is lower than yesterday and with this wonderful breeze the bugs were not a problem. I would like to order many more bug free days. If it was a choice for me, I would pick bug free over heat and humidity free. Burgers are on the grill and it’s time for the retirees to kick back a bit. Catch ya another time.

    Easy Crock Pot Pork Chops

    crock-pot-pork-chops

Spray crock pot with cooking spray

Layer pork chops in crock pot

Cover with one can of cream of chicken soup

Sprinkle with I package of dry Ranch Dressing

Cook on low for 6-7 hours

(the beauty of a crock pot is that the time can be a bit longer and the results are still good)

It’s a Monday and just as in days of old – laundry day. Too many little flies that want to sit on the clothes and make naughty as clothes were going to be hug out to dry. Thank goodness for clothes driers. Mosquitoes decided to make a huge presences known today as well. Oh for the love of summertime.

    Can't Outrun Mother Nature

Today is truly the day the Lord has made.  How could we not be happy with it?  After listening to the rain fall all night on our house awning I had hoped for a chance to have morning coffee out on the patio.  Not so much.  The rain gauge noted another inch of rain had fallen.  Dennis decided it would be a good day to take a short road trip and as the sky was clearing in the south — south it was that we headed.  Neither of us had been in Fairmont, Minnesota, for quite awhile and it is only a 40 minuted drive.

I had a short grocery list and I also knew there was a great greenhouse to the far southeast of town.  As we drove and the sun peeked out both of were thinking the same thing, how great to have the sun shining in the morning when we got up and have it shine right up to sunset. We had no more than commented to each other and the clouds descended.  The Janzen Greenhouse was loaded with plants. I couldn’t help but wonder where they would all find a home before the middle to the end of July when greenhouses usually close for the season. I knew as tempting as it was to fill the holes in my gardens from the winter kill, I had to stay on track.  I couldn’t look at the perennials as about that time the clouds opened and the open air garden hoop was being drenched. My conquest was two tomato plants, a bush cucumber plant and a Boston Fern to hang under the lilacs branches. That last item was not a necessity, but dang, so enjoyable for the summer right up to the killing frost.

The HyVee grocery store was our only other stop and we came on home with windshield wipers just a going.  We again noted the clearing of the skies and by golly if we didn’t drive into our driveway with the sun shining. I put on a fresh pot of coffee and then took a full cup out to the backyard to check out the status of some small self seeders I had hoed around. As I got to the far end of our lot I had to hustle to make a dash for the garage porch as the rain that was falling was diluting my coffee. Today the clouds have opened at will with little warning. Oh well, tomorrow is another day and Lord I do thank you for this one.

The smell of the lawn being mowed is just the best ever evidence that the spring of 2013 is on.
