A New Day, A New Start

    Porch 2016 001 (400x300)

Yesterday’s storms of winds and rains are passed. What was left behind was a flooded patio and porch area. The best decision of ours was to take out the carpet, in two pieces, and allow the floor to dry. With everything out of the porch it looks so big. This 12′ x 16′ space makes our small home just right for the two of us. The floor is drying, and we started on getting the mud off of the patio and it is all going to feel like a brand new start.  Mud and rain is the least of the worries of a storm as we had no trees go down or hail damage to our buildings.  Yup, life is good on Stauffer Avenue.

    Heat-Seeking Beauties

    2016 Cactus 002 (400x300)

Such beautiful blossoms! They look much like perfection in wax. Yeah, I know there are a few weeds.  I am leery of reaching anywhere close without gloves. Though they love the hot reflective heat from the driveway, they are not above collapsing from the weight of new growth. If only the blossoms could last a long time.

My ole cowboy got home about seven thirty this morning from the sleep study. His appointment later this month will tell the rest of the story in regard to his new sleep apnea machine.

I did spend some time in the sewing studio this morning until I hit a snag. I need time to think things over before continuing. I poked my head outside and determined today was just a perfect day to be outside.

Dennis helped me get the Mantis electric tiller hooked up. It felt good to get the last of the perennial gardens tidied up by tilling the dirt around the plants. Just to get the packed dirt worked up will allow for future rains to soak in rather than just running off.

I will admit, I sweat like my father did, and a refreshing shower was needed. After the shower it felt wonderful to sit on the patio and do a bit of reading. Life of Stauffer is just about perfect.

    Mother Nature’s Competition

    Megan's tree art

High up in the Maple tree can be seen the competition that Mother Nature has. When Megan was here over Mother’s Day, she spent a fair amount of time in the Maple tree. Soon we had to check out some goodies in the basement to be used as adornment. I think it is perfect. As we were winding up the mowing and trimming of the acre today, the bright colors amid the shade spoke volumes of the essence of Megan. We sure wish the kids were not growing up so fast. If we could wind the clock backwards so Dennis and I could have Nicholas and Megan come oftener, we would not be fair to those two as they are exploring everything from flag football, baseball, church camps and horse camp. Oh for the memories as Dennis and I reminisce sitting on the back patio taking in Megan’s colors in the Maple tree.

    No Storms for Us

    snow-balls-in-june

After today’s rain, there won’t be many of these Snow Ball beauties left. We have escaped the strong storms today, but the heavy rains and periodically strong winds will take their toll. I attended Lorraine’s funeral today along with about 50 of her family members and friends. It was only fitting that when I came home I felt the calling to go into the sewing studio and while away some time while listening to the rain falling.

This was a hugely busy day for the older ones on Stauffer Avenue. Dennis had his monthly luncheon with the Korean veterans in Mankato. I took the time to have the little red pickup serviced at Jiffy Lube, which included having the serpentine belt replaced. I didn’t hesitate one bit when it was suggested, as I remember a time past when Kevin and Kersten were stranded due to that self same belt breaking on their vehicle.

I stocked up on a few items from the HyVee store and Walgreens Drug Store before it was time to pick up my ole cowboy from the VFW. With Dennis behind the wheel and the driver’s window open, I was lulled into a bit of a nap on the way home.

This afternoon our acre has been sprayed for all those nasty weeds that love to take over. Yes, Creeping Charlie and Clover is green and lush looking when seen from afar, but it takes over our good grasses so quickly.

It definitely has been a great day, and now it is time to put the feet up and enjoy the breeze that is blowing across the patio.

    Delicate Pink and a Beauty

    May Gardens 2016 004 (390x400)

This pink Iris is one of my favorites. What makes me so happy is that all of the blossoms are just about ready to make their entrance. This forenoon I did work in the dirt under the Maple tree. It was not ideally dry, but there was a need to take out some unwanted green stuff. The rest of the gardens need to dry out a bit more as I drag more dirt out of the gardens on my shoes than is warranted. This afternoon, I took time to check through some quilting patterns that were no longer on my bucket list, but taking up storage in my three ring binder . . . out to the recycling. As I was doing the sorting, I had the Bernina embroidery sewing machine going. Yes, I needed to change thread colors as it worked through the pattern,  but getting two things done at once is what could be called “Time Management.”

I can get so lost. I went down into the sewing studio this forenoon, and before I knew it, I could not believe it was supper time. I am in the thick of a project that makes time disappear. I think I have a pretty good handle on it.

The rain has left the gardens very soggy. The gardens were my plan “A,” so I had better make good use of the time I have while the soil is drying out.

Quite the rainfall: 2.5 inches during the night to add to the 2 inches of the previous days. Of course our porch got a bit wet. We are in the path of more rain these next two days This has prompted the lawnmower to do its best. These two older ones on Stauffer have had a very physical day and we are down for the night. I hope everyone is as safe as we are. The news of Oklahoma and that area . . . so sad.  This was the perfect night for Subway to feed us.

When I am short on words, it is only as there are a lot of irons in the fire. In one corner of the sewing studio there is a quilting project that I am finishing, and in the opposite corner there is an embroidery project in the planning stage. Also, the flower gardens are slowly having their earth turned over. The later is on a bit of a hiatus due to a half inch of rain last night. I am still on board helping out my friend Lorraine, as I know she has helped out many when she had the health and energy.
