For a Monday, I was well rested. Dennis came home last night with a lot of chit chat about the three day tradeshow. Sioux Falls is a mecca of events, thus motel rates are going to make hay while the sun shines, aka: rates.

It was a very good thing that I had this evening’s meal in the refrigerator awaiting to be popped into the oven. Our neighbor gal to the south came over for a visit after the noon hour. Dennis and I had planned on a late lunch. As we finished lunch at 2:00 p.m., I received a text that I had company coming for coffee. In between time I poked in the pork steak that had been marinating and kept an eye on the clock to get the carrot dish in. It all worked out. The coffee guest left at 5:00 p.m. and Dennis and I had a great supper meal at the stroke of six. Whew!

It won’t be long and I will go down to the sewing studio and close everything down until another day. It is a good thing my iron shuts off after five minutes of not being use. Everything else had been just like the fourth of July. Part of being here and being the person that I am, I think there are days I could hang out a shingle: “Ask my opinion and you shall receive.”

    My Sunday – My Spot

    the-thinking-spot

My job jar was empty as I bask in the sun that came through the porch windows. Coffee was good, the book . . . so, so and my head may have even checked out the back rest a time or two. It’s a good thing.

    What a Gift

I am fortunate to have the gift of perseverance.  There is a huge difference between one who is a perfectionist and then . . . there is me.  I give it my all regardless of what I am doing.  With patience and an equal amount of perseverance, I like where I am today and what I am doing in “today.”  I have a sweet life.  With any given day, with any given task, I do have expectations as to the outcome.

This is a weekend that finds me home alone.  That does not happen as often as it has in the past when Dennis was on an active circuit of taking in trade shows.  Dennis knows his limitations in energy and physical endurance as to how often he runs away from home.  This show, in South Dakota, Dennis has taken in every year for 22 years.  He is grooming a friend of his who has shown an interest in taking over Dennis’ rental spot in a year or two.  Dennis would continue taking in the event, but not the setting up, tending it non-stop for the weekend, and taking it down and coming home a bit weary.

I have no set plans for a weekend such as this, it just evolves.  I am on livestock duty with the garage kittens.  Some of those kittens are getting a bit of age on them, not to mention the weight that they carry.  Yesterday while I was waiting for the shop to come and pick up the car that needed a new battery, I found myself giving the garage porch some TLC.  As we put down new carpeting last summer, we do have some carpet rag rugs taking a hit where the doors to the outside are.  Hmm.  I can still produce a pretty good snap when shaking the rugs.  My Mom would not approve as that puts a lot of strain on the warp of the rug.

Some of the livestock chose to leave the porch and others just moved as I moved around with the vacuum.  Somehow dirt from two potted plants found its way to the carpeting.  That Snuggles just has to crawl in and around the plants.  I did leave the dusting for Dennis to take care of when he gets home.  It is surprising how much dust a television screen can hold.  Butter Ball kept an eye on me as I emptied the water dish and gave it a clean.  Of course, as I was putting new water in, his paw just happened to catch the water stream.  Butter Ball loves to play in water.  In the end the litter box was totally tidied, food bowls were cleaned and refilled and I left the porch for the cats to check out all that had been moved or cleaned.  A good work out on the perseverance.  When the fellows returned the car into the garage, they took a peek at the garage porch and were amazed as to how it was tricked out.  A perfect quiet place to put off cabin fever.

I slept until nine this morning.  Amazingly the train two blocks away and the semi trucks that pass within 50 feet of our home do not interfere with my rest.  When my feet do hit the floor, I am ON.  One trip to the bathroom and when I came out the washing machine was filling with water.  By the time I had come in from letting the cats out for a run, the coffee pot had brewed some awesome smelling coffee.  I treated myself to an apple fritter to enjoy with the coffee.

The sun did not stay out for the entire day, but believe me I had windows open on the east end of the house as well as the west end.  As I am typing, I am enjoying the last of the cold breakfast coffee.  I have had a rewarding kitchen type of day.  Chocolate cookies are filling the cookie container, cold crab salad is co-mingling in the refrigerator, pork steak is marinating in the blue speckled roaster in the refrigerator right beside the baking dish that is ready to pop into the oven.  That baking dish is comprised of our favorite carrot casserole.  Par cooked carrots layered with sautéed onions, Velveeta cheese and ready to have crumbled club crackers on it before going in the oven.  I am pretty sure the pork and carrots will be fixed for Monday’s supper.  I had the kitchen going and it just kept on going and going until I was tuckered out.  Man, there were a lot of dirtied dishes.

Good grief, I have had several great days.  I did not even go into the sewing studio since Dennis has been gone.  It is hard to explain, but going solo for a couple of days is good for my soul.  I can persevere and I do persevere at my own speed . . . at my own time.  Dennis will be home tomorrow, Sunday, sometime between five and six in the late afternoon.  I will be rested without anything left on my tick list . . . taking in all of the tales that Dennis will share about his weekend at the trade show.  Priceless!

They do say that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Today my AAA card in my hand was worth money in the bank. Dennis had planned this trip to South Dakota for a year. All smiles and fully loaded he left for the weekend this early morning. About 11 a.m. I had myself ready to run some errands. There was a warm breeze and it felt good to let all the kittens out from the porch to get some fresh air. In my trusty old Lincoln I got and when I turned the key . . . there was not even a grunt.

Several weeks ago that had happened and I confessed to Dennis I most likely had left the dome light on or the door was not all the way shut. Dennis put the battery charger on it and all was good. All was good until this morning. Why put off what needs doing? I called down to the corner repair shop. Steve and his son came down within a half hour, started the car with a portable charger and they said they would bring it back with a new battery. I predominantly take care of the car and I do not recall a new battery being needed in the last years.  A few minutes after 1 p.m. I got a call from Steve. “Have your AAA card and your checkbook ready we are on our way to your home.” I was sitting on the bench outside the back door when the car was delivered into the garage.

I had kidded Kevin a while back that I had “people.” What I have is a very friendly small town. It does help that we pay our bills. Small town businesses often have to carry customers by default. Money does talk, but not as much as a friendly relationship when your town is small and everybody knows your name. Kind of like the television series “Cheers” of a time gone by. My small town allows me to know that I am really never in a bind. It’s a good thing.

    Predictions Come True

    Megan at Grammie's

A younger Megan who needed pillows to be able to use my laptop. When we chat via texting, her smile is right there for my mind’s eye . . . as it always has been. Even then, Megan was no stranger to my basement sewing studio.

Some time back when I was reminiscing with Kevin about the visits that we have enjoyed with the grandkids, Megan and Nicholas,  I spoke of a time when the visits would become far and few in between just to the fact that Dennis and I couldn’t keep the kids small forever.  The prediction of the visits becoming fewer has come true.  The prediction that Kevin made has also come true. Kevin predicted that as Megan got older she would know how to call me and we could still visit.  Megan turned thirteen in December of 2016.  Megan now has a cell phone. Yippee!!  My heart absolutely bursts when I hear the ding-a-ling on my cell phone that I have a text message . . . and it’s from Megan!  It takes me a while to punch out a text on my TracFone, but I am getting faster and better with it. We have a back and forth conversation and I love it.

Today our conversation was about the message Dennis and I had sent in her Valentine.  We kidded her that if we had one wish, it would be that she wouldn’t grow up quite so fast.  Her text told me that having one or two of her vertebra removed to allow for that wish would be quite painful.  There was an emoji attached.  I had in previous texts allowed her to know that my old time TracFone didn’t have emojis.   I then assured her to keep growing as every family needs tall, strong women.   After several back and forth, we signed off until the next time.  I really am thankful for cell phones.

It was my turn to make supper. It had been a long time since we had had homemade pizza. Because I have been disappointed in the recent past with the ground beef that is at the ratio of 80/20, we splurged on the 90/10. Excellent choice. An entire diced and caramelized onion matched up with two choices of shredded cheese. If I would have had olives in the refrigerators there would have been a corner of the pizza with the little buggers. The only negative was how hot it stayed after coming out of the oven. I know the leftovers will be just as tasty tomorrow.

Dennis made a great supper. No canned vegetables in his hot-dish. Cubed chicken breasts fixed on the stove top to perfection was added to carrots that he steamed. Frozen peas, penne pasta and Classico sauce finished off the best oven meal we have had for some time.  There is no way our kitchen pantry is large enough to have all the ingredients that the Classico company puts in their sauces. There is more! As I was in the sewing studio there was a racket in the kitchen that sounded much like a stump chipper. Not. It was Dennis making his favorite oven squash custard dessert using the 1968 blender. Very good eating right here on Stauffer Avenue.

    More Information is Required

post-a-noteI need to make a note for myself for the next time I go into the eye doctor’s office. What really are my choices for the lens materials that is available for glasses?

Not so long ago, I could run water over my glasses, use a clean white lint free dish towel and I would be good to go for the day. The composite of these is: smear, smear – and more smear. I realize lens material is no longer glass as they are no longer so heavy that they always sit on the end of one’s nose. I believe these have something to do with glare.  Okay, I could understand being in my sewing studio under many fluorescent lights . . .  the glare thing. There is a little towelette given to you when you pick up a new pair of glasses and they will also sell you a spray bottle to be used for cleaning.  Either are not very effective.

I just want to be able to see past the smears or in between the smears. I spend more time each morning cleaning my glasses than I do when brushing my two pair of teeth. UGH!

A quiet day today. I took time to research some authors for my Aunt Janet. She loves to read. I have remembered two of her favorite authors, and from there it was just hunt and peck and find authors that had similar story lines. Upon that completion I gave her a call and we chatted for a good 45 minutes. Janet has never had children and her husband has been gone for some time. Janet does go and help her nephew Dan. Dan is a confirmed bachelor and still likes to do a lot of the “good ole days” living. Dan and Janet are a good team.

I continue with a timely sewing studio project. I have an unlimited amount of patience for the project to come into fruition. It may not be evident, but that same level of patience extends to those around me. The sun was out for most of the day, and with this winter giving us some good days mixed with not so good days, the time is flying.

Dennis was off to a trade show at JackPot Junction. Lots of schmoozing by lots of ole cowboys. I had a quiet day right here on the first floor of our home. There was some reading to do and also some table work as snowflakes still need to be traced and cut. Sitting next to a north window catching squirrels doing somersaults as they nab the last of the berries in the tree – things I miss out on when in the lower lever.

A good day and I do not have to worry and stress over the Super Bowl as I don’t know who is playing. Ignorance can be bliss. The sewing studio got a well deserved break today. Late yesterday I cleaned the floor of lots of threads and fuzz, and now there will be room for new stuff floating about.
