Oh my gosh, two road trips within four days. Exercise at the Super 8 was very invigorating and Dennis was all about using my coupon at Michael’s. I think we have cooled off the road warrior for a bit. I will admit it does feel good to get some things taken care of in a timely manner. It’s mid-afternoon and I still have a great share of the day left here at home and Dennis is off to have coffee at the body shop – that no longer does body work. I don’t have any idea what Dennis will do if Rich ever gets the building sold. The boys will have to regroup. In the mean time each day Dennis works a bit more on getting his beloved garage porch floor dry.

Dang that Michael’s store in Mankato. Just for this week there is 75% off for framing. I visited with Dennis about it as we just picked up two items on the 16th with a 75% coupon. After we brought those two home and I hung them up Dennis encouraged me to pick out two more to have framed with UV glass protection. Who knew the the ole cowboy would show a bit of a flair for what looked good in regard to interior decorating. Bless his heart. Dennis got to pick out the two to take in and he suggested that they have the same color frames and matting as they looked as if they were sewn as a pair though they were done four years apart. Taking the projects out of the old frames gets to be quite a project so as to not damage the edges of the fabric. Talk about staples, two way tape and glue . . . They have been carefully laundered and have been stretched and are now drying. When the wind decides to simmer down we will be making a trip to Michael’s. Lets hear it for good sale prices.

It may not be a Sunday but this is a close second for “This is the day the Lord has made.” Dennis and I made a day out of a road trip/road date. I was excited to see the projects I had taken to Michael’s for framing. Though I had picked out the mat colors and frames it was still exciting to see it all pulled together. In years past when I had items framed I picked out a pencil thin frame and wham-bam it was deemed done. (More …)

Gray days bring out the homemade sunshine. Even without the bright natural light, the ice is dwindling. The air smells like spring and the early morning birds have found their voices. I am about to graduate from Chiropractor 101. The hurtful butt cheek has given up and now I have just what feels like a steel belted radial band across my back. We are making progress. With the chiro’s magic elbows and me faithfully doing the home exercises I should be good to go within the week. The water has gone down on our patio and Dennis has taken his rocking chair off of the table in the garage porch and has once again resumed his stints of watching TV in the garage porch, albeit a bit damp. It will be quite a while before the carpet can be determined worth saving. Tomorrow will be a trip to Mankato as Michael’s has called and two of my stitch projects (one in 2001 and the other in 2002) are ready to be picked up complete with UV ray protection glass to protect from fading. I did wash the two items as they have been previously framed with no glass and I knew it was totally safe as white dish towels have been embroidered for years using DMC embroidery and they have withstood countless laundry days complete with Hylex. Have a day everyone.

    Tags: MRI

Hello what a great day after the sun decided to shine. I have had the attitude in the recent past to accept rather than except. Scratch that! My first step toward expecting some better days was to make an appointment that included an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). I knew it was what had to be before I could expect a solution to a health issue. I felt comfortable with having to lie flat on my back on the table and even had a blanket for warmth. The table began to move into the MRI capsule and I could feel the sides if I moved my finger a mere inch. I did have a call light that they put in to my right hand and was I cautioned that for the best results I needed to lie very still and stay for the full stint. (More …)

    Grandmother Laura’s Puffball Quilt Repair

My Grandmother wanted to make a quilt for me in the early 1980′s. At the time she lived in a small mobile home that had been tricked out for her as she was in a wheel chair. The top photo is what has happened to the cotton quilt batting that she used. I am slicing open the back of the puffs – taking out the wad and replacing it with the batting of today that is very user friendly for laundry and most importantly for daily use. The original quilt was a king size and with the cotton batting it was very heavy. These photos represent the third twin size I have made out of the original. Daughter Carrie has one, I have one, and this one that I am working on will be labeled for Kersten and Kevin. Just a great remembrance of my grandmother Laura Wendlandt.

    Tags: divinity candy

Light snow with wind makes for hidden patches of ice as the snow sweeps along making small drifts with peeks that looks much like divinity candy. I must be grieving the white sugar that has been out of my diet for the last two months. The sun is out and that means I can take whatever the day brings.

    Tags: flooded basements

Again it was time to get the ice away from the back door of the house to the garage. As luck would have it the 27 degree temps actually allowed for some melting with intermittent sun. St. James has many many basements flooded with the 1.75 inches of rain on Saturday the 9th of March. The frozen banks of snow do not allow for the water to have a place to go. Just east of us is a small home with no built up foundation or basement and the city has been working all day to trench across Stauffer Ave to the south as they have several inches of water in their main living area. Our 12′ x 16′ garage porch will need a good freshening up after the water goes down but it’s just a porch – it’s not serious. At the most we purchase a new piece of carpet and call it a great spring – when spring does decide to come. Last year at this time it was shirt sleeve temps.

    Is It Really Any Wonder?

Documenting sewing projects of the past with sewn-on labels

I will have a 69th birthday at the end of this month. Recently as I was working with some of my Mom’s keepsakes and labeling them for family. It took me back to what it must have been like for my parents, Raymond and Lena Wendlandt, struggling on a rented farm acreage with their growing family and five of their own siblings that were across the seas fighting in World War II. I can so clearly remember the farm home with no electricity and bedtime came when Mom and Dad felt that there had been enough Kerosene used in the lantern that sat upon the kitchen table. One lamp that was used to see us to our beds and then be returned to the kitchen table for Mom and Dad to ponder the day they had had and what would be for the tomorrow. (More …)
